Photographer Carl Richards captured these images of A35-003 taking off on its first flight, from Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth, on December 1. The aircraft is due to be delivered to Luke Air Force Base, Arizona in early 2018 to be used for pilot and maintainer training, before being permanently relocated to Australia in 2020. A35-003, known to its manufacturer Lockheed Martin as AU-3, had its RAAF markings, including its 3 Squadron tail flashes, applied in early November, the final phase of the aircraft’s production process. 3 Squadron is due to become the first RAAF F-35 operational unit. BAE Systems is positioning its Type 31 multipurpose frigate to meet potential opportunities in the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) for additional surface combatants.
A spokesperson for the company told Jane’s on 6 November at the Defence & Security 2017 show in Bangkok that, if selected to fulfil requirements, BAE Systems would offer to build the Type 31 frigate in partnership with local industry.
The RTN ordered one light frigate from South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) in 2013 at a cost of about USD400 million. This 122 m vessel is being built in South Korea and is scheduled to be delivered to the RTN in August 2018.
